This is our farm blog, to keep everybody updated on what is going on around here. Life is crazy on a farm, and I don't always have time to update the website with everything that is going on, so this is the place to look. This is the first place we will post pictures of new babies, farm sales, and all kinds of fun stuff!
Today, and tomorrow are the last two days to order a Midget White Turkey for Thanksgiving. We still have several left, so if you are interested, contact us soon!
Always Somethin' Farm is going to have a new website! This fall we will upgrade to a newer and hopefully nicer website. I will be working on it this fall, and it will hopefully be fully updated by Christmas.
Breeding Season has finally begun! We finally separated all the animals into their separate breeding pens. The two merino ewes, and the merino ram are on the side lawn next to the house, the Coopworths are in a small paddock next to the lean-to, the Shetlands are in the lean-to, and the young lambs that we are not breeding are in the ram pen. All of my breeding Nubians are in the barn with the buck, I sent my Boer doe away to be bred, and then all of my young kids are in the buck pen. It is complete chaos around here!!!!!!!!
I cannot wait to see all of the beautiful kids and lambs that will be born this spring!
Yesterday we traveled down to Penn State and picked up a natural colored pure Merino ram. His name is Oleos and is beautifull!!! We just couldn't bear to breed our Merino ewes to a Shetland or Coopworth ram, we prefer to try and keep the breeds pure! He is very sweet and has a great fleece; I cannot wait to see what his lambs look like!
Last night as we were feeding the animals (Dad and I), we were counting up the turkeys and we noticed one of our hens was missing. We found her outside our pasture in the bushes - with 6 young turkey chicks!!!! They couldn't have been more then a day old. We weren't expecting any chicks, usually they stop laying in early August.
We would like to thank all the buyers at the 2008 Tioga County Fair Livestock Auction for helping to support 4-H. We especially thank Cox's Harley Davidson, for buying Paige's Reserve Champion market hog and Owlett & Lewis, P.C. for buying her other market hog. Thanks to Chuck Koegel for all his help with Paige's hogs, and for buying my market goat, Lou, and giving her back to me as breeding doe! Also thanks to Mansfield Agway for buying my other market goat! We really appriciate you spending your time and money to help 4-H and FFA!
This week we will all be over at the Tioga County Fair. We brought over 2 hogs, 7 goats and 5 sheep, so we will be pretty busy! Not only do we have animals at the fair, but we also have a few of our farm products; Dad entered Garlic, and I entered two fleeces. If you happen to be over there this week, stop on by and say "hello".
We have moved most of the animals to their summer homes. The chickens are at the very top of the sheep pasture. They are fenced in electric poultry netting and can eat all the fresh grass, and bugs and roam around. The only bad thing to this plan is that we have to haul food and water up there 2-3 times a day, but I guess that is what a tractor is for!
All of the does that have kidded already, and their kids are now out on the side lawn (on the other side of the driveway from the house, for those who have been here). They can roam around and have plenty of pasture. We are also using electric netting for them, so we can move the fence to give them more pasture as they need it. For the does I am still milking, I have to walk them up to the barn twice a day to be milked.
We are very excited to welcome Muffin and Creamsicle, two lovely merino ewes to our farm. Muffin is a beautiful chocolate color, and Creamsicle is white. They both have wool over their faces, and are very very cute. I cannot wait to work with the wool from these two lovely ladies!
